Bogor Transportation Agency to Take Action Against Angkot Operating in Puncak During Christmas and New Year Holidays
The Puncak area in Bogor Regency is once again expected to experience heavy traffic congestion during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holiday season. Every year, thousands of tourists travel to the highland resort area, causing severe traffic jams that often last for hours. To anticipate this annual problem, the Bogor Regency Transportation Agency (Dishub Bogor) has announced firm measures against public minivans (angkot) that continue to operate in the Puncak area during the peak holiday period.
The policy is part of a broader effort to manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, and ensure the safety and comfort of road users and tourists visiting Puncak.
Temporary Ban on Angkot Operations
Dishub Bogor has officially prohibited angkot operations in the Puncak area for four specific days, namely December 24–25 and December 30–31. These dates are predicted to be the peak days of tourist arrivals during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
During this period, all angkot serving routes in the Puncak area are required to cease operations entirely. The Head of the Bogor Regency Transportation Agency, Bayu Ramawanto, emphasized that the regulation applies without exception.
“If any angkot is found operating during the ban, it will be stopped immediately, and passengers will be asked to get off,” he stated.
Dishub also stressed that angkot are not allowed to operate under any circumstances, including being rented or used for tourism purposes.
Compensation Provided for Affected Drivers
To minimize the economic impact on angkot drivers and owners, the Bogor Regency Government has provided financial compensation during the operational ban. Each angkot driver will receive IDR 200,000 per day, totaling IDR 800,000 for the four-day period.
This compensation is intended to encourage compliance with the policy and prevent drivers from continuing operations illegally. However, Dishub warned that drivers who violate the rule by operating during the restricted period may lose their compensation and face further sanctions.
Violations Still Found in the Field
Despite clear regulations and compensation, Dishub Bogor acknowledged that some angkot drivers have still been found operating during previous holiday restrictions. These vehicles often operate discreetly or transport passengers over short distances in an attempt to avoid detection.
As a result, Dishub has increased monitoring and enforcement efforts by deploying officers at key points along the Puncak route. The agency is also coordinating with the police and other related institutions to ensure strict enforcement throughout the holiday period.
Efforts to Reduce Annual Traffic Congestion
Traffic congestion in the Puncak area during long holidays is a recurring issue. The narrow, winding roads combined with a surge in private vehicles and tourist buses often overwhelm road capacity. While traffic management systems such as one-way traffic have been implemented, congestion remains a significant challenge.
By suspending angkot operations, Dishub hopes to reduce vehicle density on the roads and improve overall traffic flow. The policy is also aimed at enhancing road safety, as crowded traffic conditions in mountainous areas pose higher risks of accidents.
Similar traffic control measures have also been adopted by the West Java Provincial Government in neighboring regions, including Cianjur, to ensure coordinated traffic management across the Puncak area.
Expectations for a More Orderly Holiday Season
Dishub Bogor expects full cooperation from all stakeholders, especially angkot drivers and transportation operators, to ensure smooth traffic management during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Public compliance is considered essential to maintaining order and minimizing congestion in one of West Java’s most popular tourist destinations.
Tourists are also advised to plan their trips carefully, follow traffic regulations, and obey instructions from officers on duty. With coordinated efforts from authorities, drivers, and the public, the Christmas and New Year holiday period is expected to be safer, more orderly, and more enjoyable for everyone.
